Impact of Psychological Trauma from Terrorist Attacks-
Practical guidance on helping children and adults cope with crisis

Orlando, FL (9-11-01) A day that most Americans will always refer to as "911" in the devastating aftermath of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. This date will live on in infamy as we all try to cope with the most aggressive attack on the United States in recent history. How will our nation deal with a crisis of such magnitude? How will you cope? Because of the catastrophic nature of the terrorist attacks, it is extremely important to take action to protect yourself and your loved ones from the dangers of stuffed emotions, or to become obsessed or paralyzed from the overexposure of watching the crisis. There are many warning signs that the stress is too powerful for a person to manage by themselves. You need to become aware of the warning signs and how to cope.

Terrorists do things to make you afraid. Panic is what they hope to accomplish.

These action steps from Critical Incident Specialist and counselor, Dwight Bain will help you to immediately cope with this crisis. Bain urges you to consider these practical action steps as you attempt to go back to your daily routine over the next few days, and especially in dealing with the needs of your children. Using these guidelines, adults will grow stronger as well as be able to reach out to children to deal with the crisis in an age appropriate manner. The stress reaction guidelines listed below will help children and adults alike.

First- Avoid stuffing your emotions.
Think in terms of an expanding balloon. This type of trauma will keep adding more and more pressure if you don't have some type of healthy outlet. If you allow these emotions to build up, you will feel like blowing up. A more effective way to directly deal with your emotions is to follow this brief model of stress management for yourself and for children.

Face it-
Directly face what has happened. The United States was aggressively attacked by a terrorist group and thousands of people have been hurt or killed. This is an act of war.

Feel it-
There are a number of normal emotions that occur after this type of tragedy. Fear, guilt, grief, panic, denial, anxiety, anger, shock, loss of emotional control or depression are all normal emotions. Regardless of the emotions that you, your children or loved ones are feeling right now, you should consider them as normal and express them verbally. You cannot talk too much as you attempt to deal with these intense emotions. Healthy expression includes talking, writing, drawing, journaling, and prayer.

Process it-
This is the cognitive stage that comes after you begin to release emotions. It is important to deal with your emotions first, and then to attempt to "figure out" what happened over the last 24 hours. Since there are no real answers to the national tragedy, it is recommended that you sort through what this crisis means to you. How is your life impacted? What does this mean to your children, or the people that you work around? What will you do differently? As you think through the events, it will allow you to begin to implement a strategic plan of action to better cope with your personal and professional life. After you process through how you will deal with this crisis, then think through how to reach out to others. Consider how you might be able to help them during their time of grief.

Grow-
The final stage is to remember that we will make it through this terrible time. We will survive. We will go on. We are a people of hope and we will band together to help each other grow strong in light of this act of war against our nation. Think of ways to get involved. Donate Blood. Give money to the Salvation Army or American Red Cross, or the charity of your choice that will be mobilizing to help our neighbors and friends rebuild their lives. Push yourself to become involved in caring for others, instead of keeping to yourself with your emotions stuffed inside.

Second- Use caution with overexposure to media images.
The images of the battered and broken bodies that will be pulled from the wreckage of the former World Trade Center in downtown Manhattan will be some of the worst that most Americans have ever seen. I am recommending that adults attempt to limit their exposure to the images of the tragedy, and especially to prevent young children from seeing what you and I would call "acts of war," on the United States. Each of these images will represent yet another family devastated by this tragedy. There will be a deep awareness that it "could have been me," which will impact everyone in different ways. Another significant factor is that constant overexposure to these graphic images will tend to create a sense of mental "numbness" that will desensitize other emotions that you may need to deal with openly. I believe that it is an act of human dignity to not become over involved in watching the removal of the bodies and that we should have pity for the dead and their loved ones, instead of watching as a form of entertainment. This type of reverence will help the families of the victims, to feel respected instead of exploited.

Third- Avoid extended periods of aloneness.
Isolation is one of the most dangerous behaviors during a tragedy of this magnitude. To spend too much time alone is not recommended, since the combination of being traumatized along with excessive aloneness could lead to being overanxious, fearful, and panic-stricken. While no one knows if there will be more attacks in the days ahead, we do know that it is mentally healthy to be around other supportive people. During the last few hours churches, synagogues, social service agencies and counseling hotlines have opened up for discussion groups, counseling, and a place of support and healing during this critical time. It is essential to be around other healthy adults, and for children to feel secure with access to their loved ones. If you live alone, it is recommend that you reach out to your neighbors or others that may be near where you live. Electronic relationships will not be as effective during a time of crisis such as this one, rather it will be more helpful to be around other people.

Forth- Strategies for dealing with children.
Children look to their parents for support and encouragement during times of crisis. The following is a guide to help parents and teachers effectively assist children in dealing with the terrorist attacks.

Ages birth-6
It is recommended that children under the age of six not be given much, if any, exposure to the terrorist attacks. Children of this age will draw their support from their parents, so if the parents or guardians feel safe and secure, the children will as well. Parents should speak calmly about the bad things that happened, and that "we will remember the people that were hurt in our prayers." If the parents are able to maintain a sense of calmness, the children will feel safe.

Ages 6-12
Children this age are more aware of the world around them, yet still need Moms and Dads to shield them from many of the terrorist events of the last 24 hours. Very limited exposure to the media is recommended at this stage, with more open discussions about their fears and insecurities. Talking is encouraged for this age group, as is holding them close and having special times of prayer. These steps should help them with any fears and insecurities.

Ages 12-18
Young people in this age group will have their own impressions of the events they have witnessed from the terrorist attacks. The older they are, the more likely they will have strong opinions. There is a normal tendency to want to process with their friends or peers. This should be balanced with family or teachers and counselors. They should have times with parents or teachers to view images, and them verbally process how they feel about what happened. Special emphasis should be placed on helping this age group talk through issues, and not go to silence or isolation, which could be warning signs that the crisis has been internalized. Strict limits on over exposure of media is encouraged.

Warning Signs.
The stress signs may occur immediately after the that the stress and trauma of the crisis or a few days later. For some it may be weeks or months. These signs are indicators that the stress is beginning to overwhelm the individual. The longer the stress symptoms occur, the greater the severity of the traumatic event on the individual. This does not imply craziness or weakness, it simply indicates that the event was just too powerful for the person to manage by themselves. Adults or children that display any of the following stress symptoms may need additional help dealing with the events of the crisis. They should seek the appropriate medical or psychological assistance.

Physical:
Chills, thirst, fatigue, nausea, fainting, vomiting, dizziness, weakness, chest pain, headaches, elevated BP, rapid heart rate, muscle tremors, difficulty breathing, shock symptoms, etc.

Emotional:
Fear, guilt, grief, panic, denial, anxiety, irritability, depression, apprehension, emotional shock, feeling overwhelmed, loss of emotional control, etc.

Cognitive:
Confusion, nightmares, uncertainty, hyper-vigilance, suspiciousness, intrusive images, poor problem solving, poor abstract thinking, poor attention/memory, concentration, disorientation of time, place or person, difficulty identifying objects or people, heightened or lowered alertness, etc.

Behavioral:
Withdrawal, antisocial acts, inability to rest, intensified pacing, erratic movements, changes in social activity, changes in speech patterns, loss of or increase of appetite, increased alcohol consumption, etc.

When in doubt, contact a physician or certified mental health professional. I challenge you to actively deal with the stressful emotions directly to help yourself and your loved ones to cope with this crisis. Remember that there are many experienced professionals that can help you. You do not have to go through this alone.

Hidden Dangers of being "Re-traumatized" from Terrorist Attacks

Orlando, FL (9-12-01) The nation continues to be traumatized from the bizarre images of devastation coming out of Lower Manhattan and the Pentagon. Great caution should be used in dealing with the visual images that will be shown over the next few days to avoid being "re-traumatized" by the harshness of what President Bush called, "an act of war."

Critical Incident Specialist and crisis counselor Dwight Bain warns parents and employers against the hidden dangers of excessive exposure to the terrorist attacks. The person continues to obsessively replay the crisis event in their mind and feels powerless to stop these out of control impulses. This will cause a continual flow of anxious emotions as a response to the stress and trauma.

The biggest danger being Re-Traumatized. This is a psychological condition that causes the human body and mind to constantly "replay" the traumatic event. The person continues to obsessively replay the crisis event in their mind and feels powerless to stop these out of control impulses. This will cause a continual flow of anxious emotions as a response to the stress and trauma. Watching the same traumatic scenes over and over can lead to tremendous emotional and physical health problems, both now and in the near future. This will seriously affect an individuals performance and stability, both personally and professionally. Why?

First, This stress is much more damaging than you think.
Many soldiers go their entire military career without viewing the type of carnage and human suffering that the average American has seen over the last 24 hours. The shock of seeing commercial jetliners flying into office buildings and those buildings explode into flame and then collapse will never be forgotten. Just as everyone can remember where they were when they heard the news that President Kennedy was shot, or that the space shuttle Challenger blew up; everyone will remember where they were when they heard the news that America had been attacked by terrorists.

If you remember how some soldiers came back from Viet Nam "shell-shocked" from the awful scenes of war they witnessed, you are aware of how dangerous these images could be to you. Already dozens of people have quietly shared with their friends or counselors that they wish they had not seen the pictures of people with charred skin covered in concrete dust, or watching people leap from the towers to their death or feeling helpless to comfort victims weeping over the recent terrorist attacks. One of the warning signs is thinking that you "cannot get those pictures out of my head." Many Americans may have already seen more graphic images of death, destruction and dying than they have ever seen in their entire lives. It can be more dangerous than most people realize.

Second, It may expose you to additional health dangers associated with trauma.
Physicians and psychologists regularly warn against the harmful effects of stress on the human body. A senior citizen in the Midwest may have witnessed significantly more stress from continuously watching television, than someone from Northern New Jersey that stood outside and watched the smoke several miles away. Witnessing continual traumatic events brings additional stress and creates heightened levels of anxiety. This continual stress, worry and anxiety has a very negative and wearing effect on the body. Stress related symptoms like migraine headaches, elevated blood pressure, gastrointestinal disorders, sleep disorders, racing heartbeat or chest pain are all common reactions to an over-stressed individual. This is particularly dangerous to the elderly, or those who may already have heart problems or any other serious illness.

Individuals are cautioned about allowing family members or employees to become saturated in watching the crisis. Think about your regular routine before the attack.

- Did you or your staff watch television nonstop?

- Did you watch only the news about critical events about world terrorism?

- Did you allow current events to become the primary focus of your day?

- Did you ignore your family or work responsibilities to keep up with breaking news stories?

Too much stress over an extended period is harmful to your health and will drastically affect employee morale, performance and productivity as well as being a leading factor in the more serious mental issues of clinical depression. Panic disorder, alcoholism or suicidal thinking. Any mental roadblock slows down your ability to get back to your regular routine as you work to make your part of our nation function successfully again.

Third, over-stimulation from trauma will create mental "numbness."
The devastating impact of watching bright red body bags full of human body parts recovered from the rubble of what used to be the World Trade Center in Manhattan, will quickly create a sense of mental numbness. This tends to block the normal emotions of shared empathy and compassion with others in pain. This blocking can cause an individual to mentally detach from the world around them. The symptoms can be extreme. Confusion, nightmares, uncertainty, suspiciousness, blaming someone, difficulty identifying objects or other people, can be some of the mental symptoms of being emotionally detached.

Employee absenteeism or extreme withdrawal into isolation activities would be a cause of concern that an individual is overwhelmed by the stress and trauma. The body will try to compensate for the heightened stress in many ways. Extremely inappropriate humor is one common way that emergency personnel often deal with death. Alcohol, overeating or other addictions are also common ways that an individual may try to escape these tragic events and emotions. However, the more an individual remains exposed to the stressful images, the greater the negative psychological impact and the longer it takes to recover. Long term health problems or potential business failures become possible when an individual is continually re-traumatized without some level of intervention.

Fourth, Rage filled reactions against others of different race and religion are more likely.
Individuals that are continually re-traumatized are more likely to become impulsive in their angry response to this tragedy. Already there have been numerous threats against fellow Americans that are of Middle Eastern descent or that practice their Muslim Faith. Students of history know of the terrible acts of cruelty that were inflicted out of fear on Japanese-Americans living in the United States during W.W.II. One of the dangers of continually being re-traumatized is the desire to dump out the rage one feels during this type of disaster on someone else. It is normal to want to vent the rage to relieve the incredible pressure. However, impulsive reactions of hostility will not relieve these tremendous feelings of pain. Only mourning and grieving will release this kind of extreme mental pressure.

It is easier to go to anger and rage, than to join in the deep level of pain and suffering with our neighbors and friends that have lost so much. Individuals that feel this type of rage may display symptoms of open racial prejudice, hostility toward different religions or specific threats of retaliation toward people of different nationalities. Often this rage is diverted onto the innocent victims of spouses, small children or pets. Employees that display any of these symptoms should be given immediate counseling assistance since the rage could build into hostility toward fellow workers or anyone close to the individual experiencing the build up of hatred.

There is a Jewish Proverb that states, "Rage does not bring about the righteous life that God desires." Individuals are encouraged to openly deal with emotions of anger and not to stuff them inside to either blowup on others, or to blow-in on themselves as depression or self-destructive behavior. Better to deal with anger openly, instead of allowing it to build up to dangerous levels and then explode on others.

Remember, Everyone deals with trauma differently.
Since there is no "right" way to deal with a stressful event of this magnitude, readers are encouraged to find the "healthiest" way possible of getting through these painful events. The more an individual stuffs down their negative emotions from the terrorist attacks, the greater the intensity of the "explosion" of human emotion when it erupts. Make no mistake, the stress will come out in one way or another. The human body and mind completely work together and are the best indicator of how a person is dealing with this crisis. Emotional or physical symptoms should be taken seriously and treated quickly. Employers, parents and family members are challenged to openly address issues with their staff, family and friends. This is a time for being proactive and involved to stop the negative impact of this trauma as soon as possible.

The longer an individual is re-traumatized, the greater the likelihood of long term problems such as alcoholism, spouse abuse, drug addiction, sexual addiction, violence toward others and suicide. These behaviors are typically a way to mentally "escape" the tremendous pain and pressure from the critical incident. All of us can remember the photo of the firefighter that carried the little girl out of the wreckage from the Oklahoma City bombing just a few years ago. He was hailed as a "hero" for carrying her out. The greatest sadness is that eventually the very same firefighter committed suicide. Since he didn't receive help for the many damaging and destructive images that he could never erase from his thinking, his unresolved pain led to his premature death from the unresolved stress of the bombing.

What can you do? Take Positive Action Steps to Deal with Trauma.
It is vitally important to take direct action during this type of crisis. Here are some positive coping skills to use during the days after a traumatic event to help lessen the psychological impact and speed you, your staff family and friends in recovery.

- Talk, talk and then talk some more. Send an email to a friend. Post your thoughts on the Internet. Take direct action to release pressure by talking through the crisis and how you felt about it.

- Listen to others, and spend time with them as they deal with these emotions of grief and loss

- Ask people how they are doing, and don't be afraid to tell them how you are doing through this.

- Avoid using alcohol, drugs, or excessive food to self-medicate the pain.

- Don't be too isolated. While some "down time" is helpful to process, it is extremely important to be around others. Professional counseling is recommended if you or someone is feeling overwhelmed. Far better to take action to prevent the devastating effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

- Only take medications prescribed by your physician, and don't hesitate to contact your doctor if your symptoms worsen or dramatically change.

- Eat well-balanced meals, this will please your mother and help you to think better.

- Stay well hydrated. Remember that caffeine is a stimulant that can heighten anxiety during difficult times like this. Caffeine also will dehydrate your body. Drink plenty of water.

- Sleep is extremely important as you try to cope with loss. Try to rest more than usual.

- Don't make any major life decisions, or impulsive plans. Take the next few days to sort though things and talk to others before making a major change.

- Keep a journal of your emotions in light of the events that you have experienced.

- Keep a regular schedule. This will allow you to feel that some things are back to normal in your life.

- Reach out to others, especially through a house of Faith. The spiritual connection of joining in prayer for the victims or the rescue workers will give you a deep sense of hope.

How to Defeat a Terrorist!
Remember, Terrorists want you to be afraid. It is their desire to paralyze you and I with fear in an attempt to shut down our country and it's economy. One of the best things that you can do during a crisis of this nature is to go on with your daily routines. Structure and schedule are extremely important to adults and children alike to allow for a sense of mental control in an otherwise out of control situation. Do not allow the enemies that have attacked our country to "steal" your life! Go on with your normal activities as best you can. It will help you in many ways both psychologically and physically, including the feeling that you are doing something important to help America. Being a vital part of a community that is involved in living out what the word "Freedom" really means. Freely going out, doing things, and being involved in the business of living as you celebrate the blessings of this country is a way to shut up terrorists. Remember that you are a citizen of a country that is shaken, shocked and stunned, but not dead. Not by a long shot.

The best way to beat a bully is to stand up and proclaim, "I am not afraid of you."

You don't have to be afraid when 275 million Americans are standing with you unified against that terrorist bully. This is a time for brave action. This is a time to stop feeling afraid and start feeling the confidence that we will make it through this together. With God's help, we will survive and one day with His blessings, thrive as a nation on the other side of this terrible tragedy.

Second-
Use caution with overexposure to media images.

WE HAVE TOTALLY LOST IT IN OUR SELFISH DESIRE TO TIE OUR KIDS DOWN FOR CONVENIENCE. PARENTS, TEACHERS AND PSYCHOLOGISTS SHOULD NOT BE SLEEPING WELL TONIGHT FOR WHAT WE HAVE DONE TO THE MINDS OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE.

DRUGS FOR THE YOUNG ARE IN OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS, WITH SIGNS ON THE GROUNDS, READING DRUG FREE ZONE. LOOK AT THE STUDY JUST RELEASED THAT REVEALS, THAT IF RITALIN WERE INJECTED IN THE VEINS, IT WOULD GIVE A RUSH SOUGHT AFTER BY ADDICTS. ALSO A DRUG THAT IS MORE POTENT THAN COCAINE. STUNNING REPORT.

WE HAVE GIVEN A LOT OF HEAT TO BIG TABACOO BUT NOTHING HAPPENS TO AN INDUSTRY SO OBVIOUSLY MISGUIDING MILLIONS OF AMERICANS DAY AFTER DAY. THIS IS EVEN MORE GRAVE THAN SMOKING.

IS IT ANY WONDER THEN, THAT THERE IS A MAJOR DRUG PROBLEM IN AMERICA ... AND RIGHT THERE IN THE SCHOOL?! WE LOOK INTO THE EYES OF OUR CHILDREN KNOWING THAT THIS TRAGEDY HAS NOW HIT HOME AND WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERY CHILD LOST. AS WITH ALL DRUGS WHAT IS THE SIDE EFFECT OF A MIND ALTERING DRUG ... DO WE KNOW?

REAPING WHAT WE ARE SOWING ... AND WE DON'T SEEM TO MIND - tdigirolamo Sat, Sep 8, 2001 at 00:11:57
Is it any wonder, that out of the Phil Donahue generation of television shows that we have come to this. The syndicated shows with those titillating titles ... "Her mom lets her daughter have sex in the house with her boyfriend." Remember that? We used to blush, but not any more. Now, "Mom and Dad throw son, an anything goes party ... stripper, booze, pot!"

Why are we so stunned? Hasn't this become a part of our culture, tightly woven in the fabric of American society?

As time goes by we are shocked by events that hit the front page of the newspaper ... Also the 24/7 news cycle, with the headline, title, and the music that makes these stories look like the movies. If it were a movie it would be a horror.

This gets more and more troubling as shows continue to follow the Donahue technique of broadcasting ... And now the networks, knowing that we don't seem to mind this deviant behavior, are expanding their creativity, and it's going to get even hotter and even more irrevrant.
And we keep on sowing ... the harvest will be ...
